Eighteen

After the others left, Sinow stood looking out the window, staring into the endless night. Thoughts of Violissa consumed him, images of her bruised and battered face, her eyes, the color of which was nearly gone, her pale skin. Images of Tynan’s abuse of her swarmed him and no matter how he tried, he couldn’t remove them. With each memory, the pain, the anger overtook his sanity. Looking back at the books that lay scattered on the desk across the room, he was overcome with the need for vengeance, a vengeance he couldn’t have. Closing his eyes to the Dark power that consumed him, he shifted outside to the entrance of Tynan’s wing. Seeing the physical reminder of the man who was damaging Violissa, holding her, holding them both hostage again, the damn he had built inside broke. He let all of his power out, aiming its force at the building, screaming with a mix of fury and pain as the force escaped his body. The wing erupted in a massive explosion, debris cascading down around him in its wake. The fury still burning within, he screamed again, the pain racking his body. Letting it all go, he fueled the fire with his emotions then looked up at the sky and shouted at the Fates, screaming in frustration, in agony.

When the ire had simmered, he stood watching the remains of the only piece of Tynan he could destroy slowly burn. The ash showered down on him like a light snow, but there he remained, lost in a sea of emotion, lost in all he could not do, awash in the guilt of letting her go that day, of not protecting her, of having her beyond his reach once again. His power wrapped around him like a blanket, but it wasn’t enough to shield him. The determination he’d had earlier drowned under the burden of a reality he could not change.
